Johan Cruyff honoured during Holland’s friendly against France

The Netherlands’ friendly with France would see emotional tributes to Johan Cruyff yesterday, with the game stopped after 14 minutes for a minute’s applause.

Cruyff wore the number 14 shirt during his career, making that number a special and intrinsically linked one to one of football’s most famous sons.

Emotion aside, Holland would have probably been happy to get a moments respite when the applause began, after early goals from Antoinne Griezmann and Olivier Giroud handed France a 2-0 lead.

The Dutch would fight back well though, with goals from Luuk de Jong and Ibrahim Afellay making it 2-2 after 86 minutes.

However, with bitter irony, France No. 14 Blaise Matuidi would pounce late to turn what could have been a memorable comeback into a 3-2 defeat.

Holland failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and will now turn all their attention towards ensuring that they will make an appearance at the 2018 World Cup.
