Manchester United fans are left frustrated at their clubs action in the market and unwillingness to spend big money this transfer window. Here we take a look why.
Manchester United have currently made two signings in Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku. United fans were filled with excitement on the 24th of May when their team won the Europa League final in Stockholm and it seemed almost inevitable that Antoine Griezmann would join the Red Devils within the coming weeks.
On Monday 21st May, Griezmann announced that there was a 6/10 chance that he would go to United. A few days later, he claimed he was ready to go and win titles, however, by the following week, Atletico’s transfer ban was upheld and he decided to remain in Madrid.
United fans took this on the chin and began to look at other potential signings and Lindelof was the first to come. There was then a period where Man United were heavily linked to Alvaro Morata, however, ended up with Lukaku.
Many United fans including myself are left frustrated at the club’s business in the market especially now that Jose Mourinho has admitted that the club are not willing to spend big and will ‘make do with three signings’.
He claimed that United don’t want to spend big money on good players, however, in the current market you have to spend big money even on players who would not be classed as ‘superstars’.
United were not willing to match Inter’s evaluation of Ivan Perisic and are therefore left trying to sign players in the middle of pre-season, which is not what Mourinho wanted.
One position that was on Mourinho’s list to Ed Woodward was the central midfield. Although United have various options in this position, they want to sign someone who can play alongside Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba.
Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that United had made a bid for Monaco’s Fabinho and the player himself said he wanted a move to Old Trafford, however, Monaco are unwilling to sell any more players this summer.
Nemanja Matic was another midfielder heavily linked to Manchester United and this move could still be on the cards but due to United’s move against Chelsea for Lukaku, this deal seems unlikely. Many fans do not want Matic and claim that he is just a better version of Marouane Fellaini.
Eric Dier has also been in the discussion this window and United fans are split between who wants him and who wants another option. Every United fan would agree that they want somebody like Fabinho or Nainggolan, however, these deals are slowly fading away and Dier and Matic look the most realistic options.
Whilst Dier is a fairly young English talent, he is not extremely fast. He can also be deployed as a centre half and he has often been described as a ‘Jack of all trades, but master of none’. Personally, I would prefer him to Matic as he is a young English talent who is also faster than Matic, however, he is not the ideal signing that the fans are looking for. Fans are hoping that Matic is being used as a smokescreen like Morata for Lukaku, for a better midfielder but this looks unlikely.
This morning, the Independent reported that Carlo Ancelotti has claimed there is a ‘possibility’ that Renato Sanches could move to Old Trafford and this is a much more appealing transfer for United fans.
It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds and whether Mourinho gets what he wants in the transfer window.
