The Reds are in the race for a top-four place while Everton are looking to close the gap on their rivals to just three points.

Liverpool are undefeated in the Merseyside derby in 13 games and if they avoid defeat at Anfield on Saturday they will match Everton's record of 14 consecutive games undefeated in the fixture.

Everton's most recent victory over Liverpool left the Reds second-bottom of the Premier League with just six points after eight games. Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta scored the goals and made it the worst possible start for Liverpool's new owner John W Henry.

This encounter was Kenny Dalglish's first game back at Anfield following his return to the club as manager. Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson but lost his first two games in charge to Manchester United in the FA Cup and away to Blackpool in the league. However, Dirk Kuyt helped end the losing start as his 68th-minute penalty rescued a point for the Reds.

Jack Rodwell was harshly shown a straight red in the 23rd minute following a tackle on Luis Suarez. The visitors took advantage of the extra man and Liverpool's £58million striking partnership of Andy Carroll and Suarez secured all three points, both scoring a goal in the final 20 minutes at Goodison Park.

A Steven Gerrard hat-trick ruined any hopes of Everton celebrating the 10th anniversary of David Moyes taking charge. It was the first Merseyside derby treble since Ian Rush scored four in 1982 and also continued Moyes' winless record at Anfield as Everton boss.

Everton fought back from two goals down to rescue a point against Liverpool. Suarez helped the visitors to a quick-fire two-goal lead as his shot was deflected in off Leighton Baines, before he headed home Liverpool's second in the 20th minute. However, Everton responded instantly and were level at the break with goals from Leon Osman and Steven Naismith.

The game ended goalless but Sylvain Distin had a goal disallowed in the first half as the Blues were denied a first league win over Liverpool at Anfield since 1999. Distin headed home from a corner but referee Michael Oliver gave Liverpool a free-kick following a foul on goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Everton were once again denied victory over their rivals as Daniel Sturridge equalised in the 89th minute for Liverpool. Both sides were forced to come from behind as Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Kevin Mirallas levelled moments later but Suarez restored the lead for Liverpool shortly after. Romelu Lukaku looked to have completed the comeback for the Blues as he scored a second-half brace with only eight minutes remaining. However, Sturridge came off the bench to head home the equaliser in the final moments of the game.

Liverpool's thrashing of Everton was their biggest victory in the derby since 1982 and the win extended the distance to four points between the two sides. Gerrard opened the scoring before Sturridge scored a quick double to put Liverpool 3-0 up at the break. Suarez made it four shortly after half time, before Sturridge missed a penalty moments later for his hat-trick.

This draw turned out to be Brendan Rodgers' final game in charge of Liverpool, following a poor start to the season. Danny Ings opened the scoring in the 41st minute but Lukaku equalised on the stroke of half-time. It was the fourth consecutive draw in the fixture at Goodison Park, in a run stretching back to 2012.

Jurgen Klopp's first Merseyside derby could not have gone better as his side thrashed Everton. Two goals in each half gave Liverpool all three points with goals coming from Divock Origi, Mamadou Sakho, Sturridge and Coutinho. Everton's Ramiro Funes Mori was sent off moments after half time.
