Championship Season Tickets: Five Clubs Offering The Best Value This Season

Here's a look at some of the best value season ticket deals to be had in the Championship

Championship Season Tickets: Five Clubs Offering The Best Value This Season

Huddersfield Town hit the headlines for several distinct reasons in the Championship last season. Few people were expecting them to figure so highly in the promotion race – and their limited budget made the promotion even more extraordinary. It’s also interesting about the German links to that team through the coaching staff, players, and the head coach.

One thing we know about German football is that the supporters are treated very well in terms of the price to attend games. Many people feel that English football could learn a lot from the Germans in this regard. It seems that the price to watch football in England gets higher and higher each season and a lot of loyal fans are simply priced out.

Huddersfield set a fitting example last season by offering the joint cheapest season ticket in the league – and continue to offer Premier League football at unbelievably low prices to fans. So, I thought I’d look at that topic and discuss which clubs are offering the best season tickets in the Championship this season. Who knows, maybe one of these teams will be celebrating promotions when the season finishes in May 2018. Please note that these are regular adult season ticket prices that we will be quoting.

So, with that out of the way, let’s get stuck into it…

1. Birmingham City (Cheapest Season Ticket: £230)

Birmingham City had a curious season last year that began brightly as they pushed towards the play-offs, but ended with them staying in the league by the skin of their teeth. Of course, there were various reason behind that including the sacking of Gary Rowett and the awful decision to bring in Gianfranco Zola in as his replacement.

The Blues have tried to move past all of that though and have the experience of Harry Redknapp in charge now. Of course, Birmingham are a big club in this league and will fancy themselves to push for the play-offs. Whatever happens, they would hope to certainly be well clear of the relegation zone for the whole season.

The club have chosen, like many teams in the Championship, to freeze season ticket prices, meaning that their cheapest season ticket represents the best value in the league at just £230. It means that if you were able to attend every home game – then you’d be paying just £10 per match. Birmingham’s average attendance last season was just 18,717 and they will be hoping that this offer improves that.

2. Fulham (Cheapest Season Ticket: £254)

Fulham proved themselves to be one of the best teams in the Championship last season and were unlucky to have missed out on promotion in the end. Fans that watch them at home know they are going to see a team that strives to play possession based attacking football. In fact, I have tipped them to be the best possession team in the Championship this season.

The club hasn’t started the season quite as well as they would have liked but will improve as things go on, and are still expected to finish in the top six. Of the teams featured in this list they have the best chance of being this season’s Huddersfield and there is also a strong similarity with the possession based football.

Therefore, the cheapest season ticket available at Craven Cottage priced at £254 could yet prove to be excellent value for money. If you were to attend every game, then you would be paying just over £11 per match. Fulham now regularly gets good attendance figures and have gained approval to expand the stadium to 30,000. However, it looks like they will continue to offer supporters the best possible value for money.

3. Burton Albion (Cheapest Season Ticket: £255)

Burton Albion did well in the Championship last season by proving they can more than hold their own in this league. It’s been quite a ride for that football club to come from non-league to the Championship. Survival was unexpected last season, but this team will carry on surpassing what is expected of them.

The Pirelli Stadium may only have a capacity of less than 7,000 – but it is an impressive small modern ground that opposing fans enjoy going to. Burton won’t be expecting to compete at the top end of the Championship, but Nigel Clough is a canny operator and will do the best he can.

Football is a big part of the community in Burton and it’s vital that their fans feel that every time the team plays. The good news is that the club truly takes that on board by offering one of the best value season tickets in the Championship. Burton’s cheapest season ticket is £255, which again works out at just over £11 per game. When you consider they will be playing some big teams this season, it really is fantastic value for money.

4. Barnsley (Cheapest Season Ticket: £270)

Barnsley are a club that I have a lot of time for, they certainly proved themselves in the Championship last season. It was a shame that they couldn’t keep their season going in the second half of the season. However, they have left a legacy behind of players that have left the club but continue to show what good Championship players they are at other clubs.

The Tykes are doing their best at replacing the talent that they have lost and the club have been one of the most active teams in the Championship for the number of players signed. It’s not just about getting the volume of players in at the club though; it’s also a matter of signing the right types with a consistent strategy and policy. It’s not hard to see that when you consider that the average age of their squad is just 23.2, which is the lowest in the Championship.

My personal view is this Barnsley team needs time to develop but could be one of the Championship teams to watch in years to come. What’s exciting for their supporters is that development can be watched at competitive prices with season tickets starting at just £270. This means that if you went to every game, then it would cost less than £12 for each match. It’s another example of fantastic value for money to be found in the Championship.

5. Sheffield United (Cheapest Season Ticket: £288)

Of the newly promoted clubs, it’s Sheffield United that I fancy to perform the best. In fact, some people have a sneaky idea that the Blades may feature in the play-offs this season. The club have certainly had their good times in the Championship and Premier League before – and will be looking forward to progressing again.

There are also a lot of good and positive things to say about manager Chris Wilder, who has a very good record at the club; he also performed well previously with both Oxford and Northampton. When the club are progressing though it’s important that those regular and loyal fans are still able to witness the action on the pitch.

The good news is that Sheffield United are offering some of the best deals on season tickets to be had in the league. The best of these was the cheapest price of £288 for the season, which works out at under £13 for each match. Even if you don’t plan on going all the time it’s still a great deal. Even if the Blades don’t have a great season themselves, it’s opportunity to see some big Championship clubs coming to Bramall Lane.

This completes the end of the content section for this article as we looked at the best deals in the Championship for season tickets. We have only really talked about the numbers here – and also the cheapest price available. It’s also a matter of the level of value that these season tickets offer, only one of these five teams are expected to be in the top six this season.
