Championship Predictions: Six Realistic Contenders To Be Top Scorer This Season

Things in the Championship are now starting to get interesting, so we thought it would be a good idea to review a few things. So, for this article, we are having a look at the goalscorers – and more specifically the ones that will compete to be the Championship’s top scorer.

This article is a combination of different things including data, factual information and personal opinion. It’s true to say that data has been used as the starting point, but various judgement calls have been made for the final selections.

So, now we have that out of the way – let’s get stuck into it...

1. Kenneth Zohore (Cardiff City)

Cardiff City have been one of the surprise packages this season so far – and have put themselves in a great position to be a promotion contender. There are certainly good reasons to suggest that the Bluebirds could be the real deal this season.

Every great and successful team needs at least one player they can rely on for goals. Kenneth Zohore might be seen as a strange choice for this list by some because he has only scored one goal so far this season.

But there is a bigger story here – and I am expecting the goals to flow for him before long. One of the reasons for that is he is leading the Championship for shots per game at 3.9. Last season, the Danish forward also scored 12 goals from 24 starts as well as having an average rating of 7.20. There is certainly plenty of strong evidence here that Zohore will be one of the leading scorers by the end of the season

2. Britt Assombalonga (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough are still finding their feet back in the Championship, but they are unbeaten in the last four – and in the top seven of the league. There are certainly still high expectations for the club – and they were major spenders in the summer.

One of the more significant signings that they made was striker Britt Assombalonga. However, the hefty transfer fee looks to have been money well spent – and the former Forest player could be the key to promotion.

The forward has already scored five league goals this season, meaning that he is making a 50% contribution to Boro’s total goals. The player has suffered his fair share of injury problems over the years – and it will be vital that he stays fit. However, there is every reason to think that he will be one the leading goalscorers come the end of the season.

3. Billy Sharp (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United have been a strong team in the Championship so far this season – and will be confident of making the play-offs. I’m not personally hugely surprised by the start the Blades have made as I picked them out as a surprise package ahead of the season.

Billy Sharp missed his team’s recent game against Norwich, but he is expected to be back soon to continue the good form he has shown so far. Sharp has already scored four goals this season, meaning that he is making a 57% contribution to his team’s total goals.

The forward may be 31 years old now, but he still has an awful lot to offer. This was shown last season as he scored 30 goals as the Blades won promotion from League One. Sharp has also had previous experience at Championship level and showed what he can do with Doncaster. There is certainly every reason to believe that the striker can be amongst the leading scorers this season.

4. Nelson Oliveira (Norwich City)

Norwich City failed to live up to expectations last season, so have gone through a period of change as a result. This means that this a new look with a different coach and a host of new signings. Understandably, the first few league games had their teething problems – but the Canaries are now starting to find their feet in the league.

Some stats have been positive for the club as well – especially passing accuracy where Norwich remain one of the leading teams for in the Championship. Nelson Oliveira is a player that there was a fair amount of speculation about over the summer – but in the end, he remained a Norwich player.

The Portuguese forward has scored four goals so far this season, which means that he is making a 50% contribution to his team’s total goals. Oliveira has a slight injury at the moment, but he expected to be fit for the start of October. The early indications suggest that the forward will be among the top scorers this season.

5. Matej Vydra (Derby County)

MAtej Vydra

Derby County have not started the season as well as they would have liked – and currently find themselves in the bottom half of the league table. However, I have a lot of time for them – and in particular the talent of their manager Gary Rowett.

There have been plenty of positive things going for the Rams this season such as them being one of the leading teams for aerials. One player that could hold the key to Derby’s season is striker Matej Vydra. The 25-year-old has already scored four goals this season, meaning that he is making a 33% contribution to his team’s total goals.

The player has prior experience at this level and has demonstrated his ability to score goals in the Championship with Watford. However, he hasn’t proved to be as good with Derby, so still has plenty to prove. Nevertheless, the talent is there and he certainly has every chance of being one of the leading Championship scorers this season.

6. Bobby Reid (Bristol City)

Bristol City are a curious club that struggled in the second half of last season – but had a strong first half. It was expected that they would continue to struggle at the start of this season – but they have performed better than expected and currently find themselves in the top half of the league.

Bobby Reid has been a real surprise performer so far this season, the player is now relatively experienced at Bristol City – but never really been a consistent goalscorer. Therefore, his position as the Championship’s leading scorer has been a surprise.

In terms of those stats, Reid has scored six goals, meaning that he has made a 40% contribution to his team’s goals. The midfield player has been playing as a striker though – and it appears he may have a hidden ability to score goals. If Bristol City can continue their good form – then there is every reason that Reid will remain one of the leading goalscorers in the Championship.
